Hey all you moms and dads out there—are you ready for back-to-school? If the answer was a big, fat NO don’t worry, we’ve got all of the latest back-to-school styles, supplies and tips to help you get your little one back to school with ease…welcome to our 3rd annual Back-to-School Blowout!!!
If there’s one thing that all of my children are super picky about for back-to-school, it’s their shoes. As a general rule, my kids tend to shy away from starting an argument with mom, but when it comes to their shoes, they all hold their ground…especially Sporty Spice.
If you read my blog often, or if we’re friends on Facebook, you may remember me talking about how Sporty Spice is a completely awesome runner (can you say no less than Top 10 in every race, with adults, she’s ever ran in?), she’s seriously one of the most athlete people I know. Sporty Spice is definitely one of those children who are always on the go; if she’s not running, swimming or playing basketball, she’s probably outside giving the younger kids in our neighborhood a softball lesson. Given the fact that SS is so athletic, I knew that she would be the perfect person to help me with a review from one of my kids’ favorite brands…Heelys!
My oldest girls have been fans of Heelys for a while now and I have to admit, they’re really cute and lots of fun for the kids. Last month Heelys announced the addition of three new lines to the Heelys family—a first in company history—an athletic shoe, a shoe made just for girls and a street shoe with improved heels.
• The first new line features athletic shoes that are substantially lighter than traditional Heelys, making them ideal for students who play sports or have active lifestyles.
• The shoes in the second line look more like street shoes than any of the previous Heelys. They have low profile "skate outsoles" that make skating easier.
• The third new footwear line, called "Lifestyles," was designed especially for females. It includes more fashion-forward colors and styles. Heelys has never designed a line just for girls/women.
We recently had the chance to check out a pair of shoes from Heelys' Fall/Winter collection and I knew just the child to help me do the review…Sporty Spice! In addition to being a completely awesome athlete, SS is also a wannabe fashionista, if she’s not starting the next big trend in her school, then she’s making absolutely certain that her outfits are unique, fun, funky and complete her. Since SS has a style all her own, I thought it would be fun for her to pick out her favorite pair of Heelys from the Fall/Winter collection, that thought was short lived however, when it took her nearly an hour to finally decide on her “favorite” pair. SS chose the Comet style in black from Heelys Classic Line and instantly fell in love with them—seriously, I can’t get her to take them off.

When SS received the package containing her Heelys, she could barely contain herself and when she finally got them out of the box and onto her feet she was out the door to try them out in the driveway—a couple of spills (which were complete user error) and a few near misses later, SS was whizzing around the driveway like a pro.
While SS was more concerned about how well the Heelys performed and how “cute” they looked on her feet, I was concerned about safety and how well the shoes were made…turns out I had very little cause for concern. Though the soles of the Heelys SS received are a little thicker than most athletic shoes, something that worried me a little with SS being so active, she seems to walk (and roll) in them with ease…a definite plus in my book. Since safety is a major issue with me, especially with SS being a runner, I always insist that she wear her helmet and safety pads (though in the video below she wasn’t wearing them since we were inside),and so far so good. SS thought it would be fun to make a little video demonstrating how to insert the wheels in Heelys and she even shows off a few of her moves…enjoy!
I must admit, I love the fact that Heelys can be worn with and without the wheel and the ease with which they can be inserted and taken out, definitely makes them that much more appealing to not only me, but SS as well. I can’t believe it’s August already, I mean, it seems like July 4th was just a few days ago—guess time does fly when you’re having fun!
If you’re like me, you’re probably counting down the days until your child(ren) go back to school and while I always look forward to the first day back from summer break, there are so many things that are changing for me this fall, making the impending change in seasons bittersweet for me.
While my husband will be bugging the piss outta me this fall with his classes, which is stressful enough times ten all by itself, I’ll also have children in all three school buildings this year…that’s a big adjustment! Our oldest, my step-son L, will be a Freshman in high school this year (this boy was 8 when my husband and I got together), two of my girls, Drama Teen and Sporty Spice, will be in the middle school, and my Lil Man,and I’m not even sure I can type this without crying, will be going to Kindergarten…I’m going to need a LOT of tissues for that one. As for me, well, I’m taking a much needed break from my classes this semester (I haven’t had one of those in a long, long time) and hopefully spending lots of one-on-one time with my darling Lil Diva.
So while I look forward to enjoying the gorgeous Fall weather and scenery that's on the horizon (it’s seriously beautiful in Southern Ohio in the Fall) , I don’t look forward letting go of my only boy and sending him out into a world where he’ll eventually realize that it’s not so cool to be a Momma’s Boy (God please let him believe this for as long as possible, preferably until after college).
Since this post is in serious need of a little sunshine, there is something that’s super awesome about the impending back-to-school hoopla—Misadventures in Baby Raising’s 3rd annual Back-to-School Blowout!

As both a student and a blogger I spend a lot of time on my computer, unfortunately my old desk wasn’t nearly big enough for me to get any real work done so I ended up spending hours sitting at the dining room table every day—not a good time. I needed a computer desk that was functional and stylish without being overly expensive and thanks to one of my favorite online stores, Hayneedle, I found a computer desk that has everything I needed and then some!
Hayneedle has been one of my favorite places to shop for some time now, not only do they have an incredible selection of home furnishings, they also have products that can stand the test of time and that is a HUGE plus when you’re a busy mom on a budget like I am. When I found out that I would be doing a review for Hayneedle I was extremely excited, I really do love their stuff, and I knew exactly what I wanted to review—a computer desk. Thankfully, Hayneedle has a huge selection of computer desks, there is truly something for every budget and every need.
In the past I’ve chosen my home office furniture based on how much space I had to work with within my computer room and in the past that space has been extremely limited. When we moved into our house last March we gained so much more room therefore I had more room to work with when choosing a new computer desk. I looked at so many gorgeous desks before finding one that fit my needs perfectly, the Bush Wheaton Corner Computer Desk.

The Bush Wheaton Corner Computer Desk defines convenient. An included file component catches important documents and can be situated on either the right or the left side of the unit. I also love that the storage drawers are so spacious and that you can place the drawers on either side of the desk. The corner design makes it so easy to find the perfect spot in your home office, or even your living room, for this desk. The printer shelf is also very convenient for people with small desktop printers.
When my desk arrived I was shocked at how much the box weighed, I seriously could not lift the box from the side of my house (where the FedEx man left it) to get it into the house and I knew that meant that I would not be putting the desk together on my own. When I opened the box (with my BIL’s help) I was instantly overwhelmed by all of the pieces, the hardware, the pages of instructions, to be honest, I wasn’t sure at first glance that I could even manage to put the desk together at all—I should have had more faith in myself. Even though there were a lot of pieces to the desk I managed to put the desk together, with a little help from my BIL, in about 4 hours—not bad for someone who has NEVER put anything together on her own. If I can do it, you can definitely do it! Once the desk was assembled I was beyond impressed, this desk is not only highly functional, it’s also gorgeous, I can’t tell you how many compliments I have received!

Remember my admission that I have somewhat of an obsession with writing utensils? Yes, well I seem to be collecting quite a bit of them lately, but with back to school for both myself and my girls that means some serious ink pen stockpiling is going on at my house! Pentel sent me several of their fabulous products to review including the EnerGel Deluxe Retractable Pen, Jolt mechanical pencil, RSVP RT Colors pens, and several other goodies! While all of the pens and pencils are amazing there are two in particular that I was very impressed with, the JOLT Automatic Pencil and the EnerGel Deluxe Retractable Gel Pen.
The JOLT automatic pencil shakes the lead out insuring uninterrupted lead flow. The JOLT features revolutionary sliding sleeve technology that automatically advances the lead for uninterrupted use even if the lead breaks due to use. The JOLT automatic pencil also features a contoured barrel for added comfort and a clear window which displays the pencils unique spring mechanism in action. School starts today for my girlies, and they are super excited to get back into the swing of things at school. Back to School means that our Back to School Blowout is still going strong…make sure you’ve checked out all of the back to school products we’ve introduced you too and don’t forget to enter all of the fabulous giveaways as well!
One of my girls’ favorite parts of back to school shopping is picking out a new lunchbox! I can’t say I blame them, I remember the excitement of packing my lunch up in a brand new lunchbox and showing it off to all of my friends. And when I saw how incredible her name looked on the front I knew that we had made the right choice and that Savanna had found THE lunch bag for this school year. On Monday I start school, again. As excited as I am for this coming semester: new school, fresh start, new experiences and people, I am also terrified about one particular class—college algebra! It’s not that I don’t get algebra, it’s not even that I dislike algebra, it’s that algebra makes me a nervous wreck. Just thinking about starting this class has me anxious and completely stress, thank goodness my other classes are all communications related!Last semester I had to take a pre-algebra course for college (that means you get to pay the same amount as you do for your other classes, but it doesn’t count towards your progress…gotta love that). In my defense I did happen to take the COMPASS test (or what I like to call…the college placement test for old people) about 10 years after I finished high school, so I didn’t remember anything. I did extremely well in my pre-algebra class, nothing below a 92 (yay me) but college algebra is another story entirely! Thank goodness I had a secret weapon last semester in my TI-83 Plus, for those of you not into the whole math thing, that’s a Texas Instruments calculator and my best friend last semester. This semester called for something a little more advanced, and I found that in the TI-Nspire!
A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to do a review for the TI-Nspire, knowing that my college algebra class was getting closer and closer I couldn’t resist the opportunity. One of my absolute worst fears in high school was forgetting my locker combination. I received both the Speed Dial and the Precision Dial for my review. I was very excited about trying these locks as my past experience with remembering combination hasn’t been great. I was also so glad that there was finally a lock that my oldest daughter could use without worrying about forgetting her combination. The Speed Dial has turned into my absolute favorite combination lock ever! I love how easy it is to open and even better how easy it is to remember the combination…it really was as simple as remembering—up,up,down,down! As a matter of fact, the Speed Dial was so easy that all of the big kids could open it without even locking at the directional arrow, and my three year old figured out how to open it in about 2 minutes! We truly did love this lock and all of the kids demanded that we go out and get one for each of them for their lockers this year! The Precision Dial was just as easy to use as the Speed Dial, remembering a combination of numbers and letters seemed to make remembering the combination so much easier. My daughter Savanna had the combination down pat in just a few try's and commented that she wanted one as soon as she was in middle school.

Our BTS Blowout is going full steam ahead…I mean come on, when is the last time you’ve known me to post on Saturday? Anyway we have a ton of great products and awesome giveaways left so make sure you stick around!
As I am sure many parents will agree, shopping for clothes is one of the most daunting and least fun parts of shopping for back to school. While I don’t usually mind shopping for clothes, shopping for clothes with two girls who have very different tastes and have not yet quite grasped the concept of what “affordable” is, is challenging at best. That’s why when I have the opportunity to shop online I am all for it and that is just one of the reasons why I love Tea!
No, not the drink (though I do love a big ole glass of the sweet iced variety) Tea clothing. Tea started in San Francisco in 2002 with three pima cotton sweaters. Tea offers children’s fashions with the tagline “for little citizens of the world”, celebrating the beauty found in different cultures from around the world.
Tea offers clothing for children from birth to age 12 for boys and girls. The Tea Collection is a unique mixture of colors, textures, and fabrics from around the world, in my opinion it is that uniqueness that makes Tea stand apart. Tea gets the inspiration from their clothing from everyday items around the world; a manhole cover in Budapest served as the inspiration for a boys pullover, Nesting Dolls proved to be too beautiful to simply display so the people at Tea used them as the inspiration for a girls tee, and so on and so on. Not only are Tea’s clothing beautifully simplistic and absolutely adorable, they are also well-made and surprisingly affordable!

(aka Lil Diva) and a dress and leggings for my daughter Savanna. As soon as I unwrapped the first dress I knew that I was dealing with a brand who took pride in their clothing. The Folk Flower Layered Sleeve Dress and matching leggings that I received for the Lil Diva were the perfect mixture of “Little House on the Prairie” meets modern baby; the fabrics were soft and comfortable and the pattern and colors impeccable. The Bandana Lace Print Dress and matching leggings that the people at Tea sent for my daughter Savanna were just as adorable as the folk flower dress; the poplin pattern inspired by the intricate lace bandana’s worn in the Hungarian countryside, took me straight back to the days of watching Little House and Anne of Green Gables. I was so impressed with not only the dresses, but the amazing attention to detail that so obviously went into bringing their inspirations to life! As soon as my daughter Savanna slipped on the dress and leggings she stood in the mirror admiring herself for the better part of 5 minutes, “Mommy, I look like one of those old fashion girls.” she said to me as she spun around in circles. Savanna loves all things “old fashioned” and this dress was no exception, I had a very hard time getting her to take it off! Of course, not all of the clothing at Tea is old fashioned looking there are so many adorable, affordable, amazing fashions that the hardest part will definitely be trying to choose!Buy it!

With Back to School time upon us there is one thing I worry about year after year more than anything else…my children getting sick! It seems that no matter what I do or how much I try to teach them the dos and don’t of germ control I end up visiting the doctor’s office as often I do the grocery store during the school year.Did you know that nearly 22 million days of school are missed each year because of the common cold and the flu (CDC)? Or that there are as many as 2.7 million bacteria found per square inch on common school supplies (NSF International)? That kind of makes the plea of “Don’t share your pencils” much more urgent! This school year Seventh Generation is sharing tips from best-selling author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child’s health during back-to-school season. Dr. Greene gives the following precautions:
Optimize the immune system
- Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt. A recent study showed that children who received enough probiotics daily throughout the cold and flu season had a significant reduction in the number of illnesses they had and, when they did get sick, the symptoms were both milder and didn't last as long.
- Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D from the sun, from food, or from a supplement.
- Build a strong foundation. Good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish.
- Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom. The most important times include after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom, upon leaving "high-risk" places (recess, naptime, play stations) and before meals or snacks.
- Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation’s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs* naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
- Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze. This simple maneuver has spectacular results in decreasing the spread of viruses and bacteria floating about the room, waiting to be inhaled.

I received the Spring Blossom short sleeve tee in turquoise to review. First and foremost I have to tell you that choosing a t-shirt to review was extremely difficult; all of the colors and designs are gorgeous. I finally settled on the Spring Blossoms for a couple of reasons; first off I loved the color, the turquoise is so rich and vibrant and just brilliant in person and I also thought that the blossoms were just amazing against the blue. When I received my tee I couldn’t help but take it straight of the package and wear it and the number one thing I noticed the moment I put the tee on was the amazing way the fabric felt against my skin…it was perfection! Normally with t-shirts made with such thin fabric I feel uncomfortable wearing them because of how tight they are on my stomach, but the Stellarocco tee wasn’t like that at all which pleasantly surprised me! I do have one negative about the Stellarocco tee I reviewed, after just a few hours wearing it I noticed 3 tiny pick holes in the front of it, but I have seen this with other tees made out of such thin fabric—I think it all comes down to being delicate with the tees…so make sure you keep that in mind! I also want to say that I contacted Dina at Stellarocco about the holes and she was on it with a quickness sending out a replacement shirt! So what is my favorite thing about Stellarocco tees? Well the fact that they are affordable, with tees starting at $20 and nothing over $28 I think that’s a great bargain, plus Stellarocco offers FREE shipping on purchases shipped within the US!

Whether your children have already started school or they are reluctantly counting down the days until they do—one thing parents and kids everywhere are doing is back to school shopping! We here at Misadventures want to make BTS (back to school) shopping as easy and stress-free as possible by showing you the latest products, giving you the most helpful tips, and show you how to do it all on the cheap!One of my absolute favorite companies for BTS products is Carolina Pad, not only are their products sold at Wal Mart (among many other places) they are funky, hip, unique, and affordable! For those of you who haven’t heard of Carolina Pad let me give you a little bit of their history. Carolina Pad started in North Carolina in 1954 when Joseph K. Hall Jr. scraped up enough money to start a school supply manufacturing company. By selling notebook paper with more sheets at lower prices than their competitors Carolina Pad was able to gain a solid foothold in the market. In 2000 Carolina Pad turned the school supply world upside down when they introduced fashion into the ho-hum world of school supplies. As I mentioned above I really love Carolina Pad’s products, not only do I buy them for my oldest girls for BTS, but I also make sure to pick up a few notebooks and pens for myself for my classes! The items that I received to review (pictured above) are part of Carolina Pad’s Studio C collection that are available exclusively for the back to school season (July-September) at Wal Mart. I have to say that not only did I love the products because they were from Carolina Pad, I loved them because they were absolutely gorgeous and fit my 11 year olds personality to a tee! Fun, funky, fresh, and fabulous, those are the words I would use to describe the Studio C products from Carolina Pad. My 11 year old LOVED them and cannot wait to show them off on the first day of school, Mommy on the other hand is a little bummed that my daughter called dibs on every single product before I had a chance to—not to worry mommy managed to wrestle away a few goodies for herself! I’m pretty sure your elementary, middle, high school, and/or college student will love this collection as much as my daughter and myself do! And let’s not forget that at prices like that…we can afford to buy a ton to keep at home for later in the year (something I always do).
