With Back to School time upon us there is one thing I worry about year after year more than anything else…my children getting sick! It seems that no matter what I do or how much I try to teach them the dos and don’t of germ control I end up visiting the doctor’s office as often I do the grocery store during the school year.
Did you know that nearly 22 million days of school are missed each year because of the common cold and the flu (CDC)? Or that there are as many as 2.7 million bacteria found per square inch on common school supplies (NSF International)? That kind of makes the plea of “Don’t share your pencils” much more urgent! This school year Seventh Generation is sharing tips from best-selling author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child’s health during back-to-school season. Dr. Greene gives the following precautions:
Optimize the immune system
Through MyBlogSpark I received a Seventh Generation gift pack to review. I’ve never used Seventh Generation prior to this review, but I had heard so many great things about both the company and their products from other bloggers and friends. And I also think it’s only right that I admit that I have an obsession with sanitizing everything, hey with babies in the house keeping them from being exposed to germs is very important to me. I was sent several products from Seventh Generation: 2 canisters of Seventh Generation disinfecting wipes, disinfecting multi-surface cleaner, facial tissue, and paper towels so I had plenty of cleaning to do (and I couldn’t wait)! One of the things I love most about Seventh Generation is their commitment to inspiring conscious consumption! I love that Seventh Generation is pushing to make the world more conscious of the decisions we make!
Since I strongly feel that honestly is the best policy (especially where review bloggers are concerned) I have to say that I do not love the scent of the Seventh Generation products. That being said I hate the smell of bleach too! Aside from the smell I love everything about the products that I reviewed! It may sound strange but it just felt like my house was cleaner after using the Seventh Generation products—and I live for that feeling! The best part about using the Seventh Generation products though is that I feel like I’m giving my children a fighting chance against the germs and illnesses that will surely plague their (and many other) school this year!
How would you like to win a Seventh Generation prize pack just in time for Back to School? Well thanks to MyBlogSpark and Seventh Generation you can! One Misadventures in Baby Raising reader will win the Seventh Generation Prize Pack shown below!

This school year Seventh Generation is sharing tips from best-selling author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child’s health during back-to-school season. Dr. Greene gives the following precautions:
Optimize the immune system
- Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt. A recent study showed that children who received enough probiotics daily throughout the cold and flu season had a significant reduction in the number of illnesses they had and, when they did get sick, the symptoms were both milder and didn't last as long.
- Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D from the sun, from food, or from a supplement.
- Build a strong foundation. Good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish.
- Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom. The most important times include after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom, upon leaving "high-risk" places (recess, naptime, play stations) and before meals or snacks.
- Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation’s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs* naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
- Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze. This simple maneuver has spectacular results in decreasing the spread of viruses and bacteria floating about the room, waiting to be inhaled.

I like to sanitize the door knobs more often. Especially the ones where you come into the house before washing. I also always make sure my kids carry sanitizer.
