Green Golly Kids CD {Review and Giveaway}

 *Updated at Bottom With Winner!*

My children love music; from rock and pop to country and blues, they all have rather eclectic tastes when it comes to what they listen to.  There is one genre of music however, that they don’t seem too fond of—classical.  While I can certainly appreciate the beauty and history of classical music, my children prefer hard hitting drum beats and catchy pop lyrics.  That doesn’t mean I don’t try to encourage them to listen and appreciate classical music, it’s just a little more difficult to pull off than say Justin Beiber.image
A few weeks ago I was approached to do a review for Green Golly & Her Golden Flute and I was more than happy to check it out—I just hoped my children would be as receptive as I was.  First let me start by telling you a little bit about Green Golly.  Green Golly & Her Golden Flute combines classical music, humor, and amazing storytelling in a children’s CD.  Green Golly (by Flute Sweet and Tickletoon also known as Barbara Siesel and Keith Torgan) introduces children to classical music in a way that my children have never experienced.  Green Golly takes the much loved tale of Rapunzel and gives it a new and refreshing twist.
“Rapunzel may have suffered isolation and distress during her days trapped in that big old tower, but her alter ego, Green Golly, has a wonderful golden flute to express her deepest feelings and a large stack of music by the world’s greatest composers to explore.  A keen observer of all that whizzes by her window, Green Golly is inclined to rely on her musical abilities to help her unravel the mysteries of life in this funny, engaging tale of romance and rescue, interwoven with works of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Gossec, Elgar, Bizet, Chopin, and Copland.

As produced by Randall Keith Horton – chosen by Duke Ellington as his composing and conducting assistant, succeeding Billy Strayhorn – the heart of Green Golly & Her Golden Flute is the gorgeous sound that world class flutist Barbara Siesel creates, making music by some of the greatest composers of the 19th and 20th centuries come alive with an impeccable sense of style and phrasing.  Add to that the frolicsome energy and fun of Keith Torgan’s storytelling and guitar playing, and you have an album that’s truly something extraordinary in children’s entertainment. Torgan fairly dances through the voices of the new characters he’s created to grace the beloved old tale, from Vlotek the Gypsy to Mousey Tongue. “
As I mentioned above my children are not too fond of classical music so I was very anxious to see how they would respond to Green Golly.  On a car ride to the grocery store I decided to pop in the Green Golly CD for my youngest children.  Honestly I expected them to ask me to turn on their music, but was amazed to look back a few minutes into the CD to see them completely engaged and enjoying the funny story and beautiful music!  I too found myself smiling and laughing at the humorous way the story was told, of course my favorite part was the music, and it was amazing.  I knew Green Golly was a hit when we arrived at the grocery store and my son told me—“No mom I not go in…I listen to this.” I can only assume that meant he liked it!
Buy it:  You can purchase the Green Golly CD online here.
One lucky Misadventures in Baby Raising reader won’t have to wait to purchase the CD because I have a copy to give away to one lucky winner!

Suave Naturals Mango Mandarin Giveaway!

When you become a mother there are some things you learn to do without; clean hair, a clean house, a moment of peace in the bathroom…you know every day stuff like that.  There is however one thing I refuse to give up—my nightly baths and the routine that goes with them, it’s my “moment of bliss” in an otherwise insanely hectic day.
suave
Suave (one of my favorite brands) knows how important it is for women to be able to “catch a moment of bliss” in their chaotic and crazy days.  How are they doing that?  By inviting you to try their newest addition to the Suave Naturals Body Wash family…Mango Mandarin.  I have to admit that the Suave brand is one I buy weekly and use daily, from their shampoo and conditioner to their amazingly fragrant body washes, you cannot beat the superior product for the definitely affordable price!  The Suave Naturals Mango Mandarin Body Wash is infused with a blend of mango and mandarin extracts as well as skin conditioning Vitamin E, the result is a luxurious, revitalizing body wash that leaves you  feeling energetic.SVP-12oz-BW-MangoMandarin_L
I received a bottle of the new Suave Naturals Mango Mandarin Body Wash to review and I was very excited to try it out—trying out all of the Suave Natural’s fragrances is sort of an obsession of mine.  My first impression of the body wash was that it smelled fabulous…not that I thought my brand would disappoint!  But the real test would come when I used the body wash—sometimes (at least for me) I find that some body washes that smell great in the bottle smell completely different when you’re using them and once they are on your skin.  I found the Mango Mandarin to smell pretty much identical when I was using it as it did in the bottle (major points in my book).  I also loved that the body wash didn’t dry my skin out, something I have a major problem with when it comes to most body washes.  Overall I really loved the Suave Natural Mango Mandarin Body Wash…everything from it’s intoxicating scent to the way it left my skin feeling!
Buy it:  You can purchase this and many other Suave products at most major retailers!
How would you like to try the new Suave Naturals Mango Mandarin Body Wash?  Guess what?  One lucky MIBR reader is going to win a bottle!
Win it:  Leave a comment telling me why you need a “moment of bliss” with Suave Naturals.  This is mandatory and must be completed before any extra entries are counted!

Firehouse by Mark Teague {Review and Giveaway}

All four of my children love to read (or be read to).  My oldest daughter’s both love reading and have from an early age and both of my youngest children squeal with delight when it’s story time.   My children loving finding new adventures in the form of books and the stories and pictures within their pages.image
Recently I had the chance to review the new book Firehouse by award winning children’s book author and illustrator Mark Teague (Teague has also written Funny Farm and How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You?).  Firehouse follows the adventures of cousins Edward and Judy as they spend a fun-filled day learning how to be firefighters.  From a fire drill that leads to a slippery slide down a fire pole, to a hysterical battle with an out-of-control fire hose, Edward is in for an action-packed adventure. And when faced with a real emergency, can Edward save the day?  You can see the trailer for the book below and you can learn more about the book here.

My youngest children were eager to have the book read to them when it arrived.  As much as they both love books, it’s sometimes not an easy task for me to get both of them settled and ready to be read to.  While we were reading Firehouse I noticed that they really paid attention to the illustrations and asked questions (something I love).  When we were done reading the book for the first time they even asked to have it read again…so it was a definite hit at our house!
Guess what?  Two MIBR readers are going to win a copy of all 3 books by Mark Teague!
Win it:  To be entered into this giveaway just leave a comment on this post telling me who you want to win these books for!   This is mandatory and must be completed before any extra entries are eligible!

Zylie the Bear Review and Giveaway!

If you have children chances are pretty good that you have a stuffed toy or 50 lying around the house.  Chances are even better that those stuffed toys are often left neglected at the bottom of the toy box—in my house this sadly seems to be the fate of most of the stuffed toys my children bring home.  I have to be honest and tell you that in my house my children seem to loose interest in most toys because they are simply not engaging enough to keep them interested.  Fortunately for my kids (and for me) I was recently introduced to a stuffed bear that takes fun and learning to the next level!

image

Zylie the Bear is an inquisitive 12 year old bear who travels the globe looking for fun and adventure.  Zylie’s travels come to life in a series of books, the first in the series being The Adventures of  Zylie the Bear, New York.   Zylie is an 18 inch plush bear who can bend and move (much like Barbie).  The Zylie the Bear, New York Kit comes complete with Zylie (dressed to the nines in her signature skinny jeans, flounce top, and swing jacket), all of her accessories (an orange messenger bag which contains a map, passport, and diary), and the accompanying book (The Adventures of Zylie the Bear, New York).  Of course, no journey around the world would be complete without a virtual word to share her adventures—Zylie’s website offers children the chance to not only interact with her, but also get involved in every aspect of the stories.  Zylie  also has an adventurous globe trotting friend who share her love of travel and adventure; Shen the Panda!

image

We received both the Zylie the Bear Kit and the Shen the Panda kit to review—and when I say my kids were excited, it’s an understatement.  My daughter Savanna was the perfect age to be the test subject for Zylie the Bear—she loves traveling, fashion, and reading—so I knew her time with Zylie would be well spent!  I have to note that the attention to detail in not only the bears, but every aspect of both kits is just phenomenal!  My absolute favorite features of the bears are their trendy clothes and impressive accessories (my personal favorite is the tiny drumsticks that Shen has tucked neatly away in his backpack).  My kids had a great time playing with both Zylie and Shen and listening to and reading the books that accompany the bears.

zylie_reviewWhat Savanna Says:  I really like Zylie because she has very cute clothes.  I also like the book that comes with Zylie because I really like to read and I liked reading about Zylie’s adventures.

Buy it:  You can purchase Zylie, Shen, their accessories and books online at ZylietheBear.com

One MIBR reader won’t have to wait to buy Zylie, because the nice people at Zylie are giving one MIBR reader a Zylie the Bear Kit (ARV $75)

Win it:  To be eligible for this giveaway please visit the Zylie the Bear website and look around, come back and leave a comment on this post telling me something about Zylie or the people behind Zylie that you learned from the website!  This is mandatory and must be completed before any extra entries will be accepted!

Fun in the Sun Day 11…Eureka Tents {Huge Giveaway}

As bittersweet as it may be, today is the final day of the Fun in the Sun blog party!  I would like to thank all of our  sponsors for the awesome giveaways and all of you for entering!  I wanted to make sure the Fun in the Sun blog party went out with a bang—and thanks to Eureka Tents it will!

EurekaAdbutton

What is more fun in the summer than going camping?  From the time spent with family and friends to enjoying the great outdoors—camping is a favorite among families when the weather is warm.  I must admit that I am not an outdoorsy person; I don’t like bugs, I’d rather sit inside in the air-conditioning when the mercury rises, and peeing in the woods has never been high on my list of things to do.  Unfortunately for me all of those things seem to appeal to my family (though I couldn’t imagine why) so I have decided that I may just have  to try camping for them.  Fortunately for me I found a company who may just make our camping adventure a little easier—and a lot more fun!
image
Eureka is a company that specializes in the outdoors; from family and backpacking tents to kids sleeping bags, Eureka has just about everything to make your outdoor experience successful!  Not only does Eureka know how to do camping they also know how to give back!  With their Sheltering Haiti 2010 Campaign, Eureka is committed to donating 100 Eureka tents to the OASIS Institute ( an “adopt a child at a distance” program that enables Haitian children orphaned during the 2010 earthquake to be raised in their native country).  The best part is that you can help them reach their goal of 100 tents—it’s quick easy and for a great cause—simply visit Eureka’s Facebook Page and become a Fan (or Like)…for every 20 new fans Eureka will donate one tent to the OASIS camp in Haiti until their goal of 100 is reached.  So make sure you head over to Facebook and become a Fan of Eureka and do your part to help with the devastation in Haiti!

I received the Eureka Timberline SQ 2XT tent from Eureka to review.  The Timberline SQ 2XT (a throwback of sorts to the classic Boy Scout tent in design) is a compact, lightweight (total weight being 6lbs. 10 oz.), three-season tent that is ideal for backpacking and camping in wilderness conditions.  Proprietary Sequoia A-frame and updated  materials provide strength, stability, ease of entry, and increased internal volume (something I can definitely attest to).  Some of the more notable features of the Timberline SQ 2XT tent are:
*  SQ Hub-  The proprietary SQ Hub offers strength and optimum angles to provide for increased internal volume and excellent livability.
*  Mid-Span Pole Spreader-  The mid-span ridge pole spreader bar accentuates the curves in the tent body, adding internal volume to the tent body.
*  Vertical Doors-  Two large vertical D-style doors with Hi/Low venting offer ease of entry and increase ventilation.
*  Vestibule-  Tent vestibule provides extra room to store gear.
*  Bathtub Floor-  Bathtub floor wraps up sides of tent, protecting against splashing and standing water.

Eureka_review

My kids were very excited when our Timberline SQ 2XT tent arrived, it was as if they knew that the tent was their way of getting me into the great outdoors.  I figured that the set-up was going to be a nightmare, and since I’ve never exactly pitched a tent before I enlisted the help of my husband and brother-in-law to get it set up, but to my surprise (and theirs) it was pretty easy to set-up and took less than 10 minutes from start to finish.  While I love many things about the Timberline SQ 2XT the one attribute I appreciate most is its size.  While the tent is a 2 man tent it easily fit my husband, brother-in-law and a couple of the kiddos with some room to spare and all of the kids (yes all 6 of them) had a great time playing around in it before we took it down…so it is very roomy!  I also very much appreciate the nostalgic look of the tent, it definitely brings me back to my childhood and seeing the tents the boy scouts became fast experts in pitching.  Perhaps my favorite thing about the Timberline SQ 2XT is the fact that I can finally go camping with my kiddos and feel safe, warm, and sleep sound…yes that is my definitely my favorite!

Buy it:  You can purchase the Timberline SQ 2XT Eureka camping tent online at eurekatent.com for $219.00.

One very lucky Misadventures in Baby Raising reader won’t have to wait to purchase the tent though because Eureka is giving one lucky reader a Timberline SQ 2XT tent of their own!  Can you say awesome?

Win it:  To be entered into this giveaway you must visit Eureka and look around, come back and leave a comment on this post telling me which other item (you cannot use the Timberline SQ 2XT for your answer…those who do will have their entries deleted) you would like to have.  This is mandatory and must be completed before any extra entries will be eligible!

Fun in the Sun Day 10…All Terrain

So I know I promised you 8 days of the Fun in the Sun blog party, but due to a great response from the sponsors we were able to extend the event and introduce you to more great companies and offer you more great giveaways…you guys don’t mind do you?  I didn’t think so!

image

With summer on the horizon and my kids outside playing more it’s time to start being proactive and make sure that they are protected against the sun’s harmful rays and the buggies that come out when it starts getting warm.  I am pretty adamant about my children wearing sunscreen and bug repellent (yes I’m the mom on the sidelines of the soccer games with bug repellent in one hand and sunscreen in the other) but at the same time I don’t like covering my children with a bunch of chemicals.  I have tried many, many of the products on the market and while most of them do their jobs, I can never seem to get over the chemicals that they contain.  That’s why I was so excited to be introduced you to All Terrain.

image

All Terrain is a company dedicated to selling quality “natural remedies for nature enthusiasts”.   All Terrain was founded in 1996 when founder Todd Hakanson was hiking in Costa Rica when a bottle of DEET insect repellent leaked from his backpack and essentially ate through his backpack and the keys on a calculator he was carrying.  Hakanson decided to do some research into the effects of DEET and what he found shocked him so much that he developed an all-natural insect repellent formula.  In addition to all-natural ingredients All Terrain also uses packaging made from recycled materials, they do their part to increase awareness for environmental issues, and they also work closely with Environmental Groups to increase awareness and to educate the public.image

All Terrain has a full line of products that won’t harm you or the environment.

*  Insect Repellents:   designed to protect against mosquitoes, ticks, gnats, flies, ants, and other creepy crawlies imageand include Herbal Armor Pump Spray and Lotion, Bite Soother Spray, and more.

 *  First Aid:  designed with the environment and natural solutions in mind.  Products include; Aloe Gel Skin Relief, Recovery Rub, Poison Ivy/Oak Cream and Soap, Breathe Better Rub, Weathershield Protectant/Sunscreen.

 *  Sun Protection:  products are designed to protect your skin naturally and are biodegradable and include;  TerraSport SPF15& SPF 30, AquaSport SPF 15 & 30, Kid Sport SPF 30, Lip Armor w/SPF 25, and WinterSport Skin Protectant/Sunscreen.

*  Sanitizers:  kill 99.9% of bacteria and germs without chemicals and can be used anywhere/anytime.

*  Kids Care:  products specifically created to protect kids outdoors.  Products include; Kids Herbal Armor Spray and Lotion, KidSport SPF 30, Kids Eczema Cream, Kids All Weather Cream, KidsWash, and more.

*  Latex Free Bandages:  Adult bandages, kid bandages, Waterproof strips, and Gauze.

* Soaps:  Natural biodegradable and concentrated soap.  Products include; Grime Bar, OdorEase Liquid Soap, The Foot Bar, and Ditch Itch Car.
