There is nothing in this world that bugs me more than when the people at my house ask me every day, "Hey Mom. What's for dinner?"
Sure I realized when I started a family that I'd have to cook the occasional meal (this is actually what I thought...that it would be occasional) but never did I imagine having to do it every single day!
Now I will be the first person to admit that I do not like to cook...I used to love cooking and even entertained the idea of going to culinary school, but when you do something 3 times a day 365 days a year for YEARS it kind of gets old at least it did for me! The mere fact that cooking is something that I dread is not even what bugs me most...its being asked "What's for dinner?" I know it may sound crazy (I never claimed to be completely sane) but let me explain my reasoning behind the madness...

- I am always the one who has to make the decision about what to cook for dinner...always! when I ask another memeber of the family they almost always respond with. "I don't care...whatever you want!"
- I always seem to get in a rut and cook the same 5 meals week after week and then my family has the nerve to complain about it...are you kidding me? I've been asking for your input for years now!
- I've been cooking what I want forEVER and I'm tired of what I want and I would love to cook what someone else wants but no one will ever tell me what that is...I know I have eyes in the back of my head and I always know where your favorites shirt are, but I can NOT read your minds!
I put a list on my fridge of chicken dishes, ground turkey dishes and misc. dishes. I take the meat I want out (usually what we didn't have the precious night) and give the hubs a few options. We do repeat meals alot, but as we try new ones, or I just remember something we used to have, I add it to the list. When the hubs says "whats for dinner?" I tell him to pick a dish!
ReplyDeleteWhat I hate is when my husband will ask me what's for dinner as I'm cooking it!
ReplyDeleteI'm the oldest of 6 in a italian family my mother would just say
ReplyDeleteSOS which stood for s*it on a shingle. Bad mommy.
I agree completely. I finally started meal planning (i.e. making a list on Sunday nights) this year and it really helps. I don't ask for any input (my husband usually says "whatever" and my son asks for chicken nuggets), so that makes it easier. See http://juniandpip.blogspot.com/2009/04/first-quarter-meal-report.html for more :)
ReplyDeleteOMG! I could have written this post, as I have bitched about the same thing! LOL I got home from work today and asked my son, "how was your day?" He answered "Good....what's for dinner?" Not "Good, how was yours?" Arggh!
ReplyDeleteI always ask my husband what he wants and he never helps me come up with any ideas. But he lets me know that he is not in the mood for whatever I end up making.
ReplyDeleteI need to start meal-planning again so I have more ideas and options
when they ask me what's for dinner I say, "ask Daddy when he gets home." yes, I stay home so I really should do the cooking but I'm baaaaad at it. I made up for it by not strangling his children who I am pretty sure are Satan split in two.
ReplyDeleteyikes, that went kinda long and got nasty, oops. I'm not gonna strangle them. probably :)
