Since we’re still talking all about Back-to-School I wanted to share something with all of you!  It’s a chance to nominate your child’s school and possibly help them win a $65,000 Green Makeover!  You can check out all of the details below!

THE CONTEST:

Every child deserves a learning environment that’s safe, healthy, free of harmful toxins and optimal for learning. Unfortunately, many schools across the country are subjecting children to unhealthy classrooms with poor lighting and inefficient energy usage, which costs most schools more money than they spend on books and computers. Global Green USA is working to change this by helping to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn in a healthier, greener school. Pureology is pleased to present Global Green USA’s Green School Makeover Competition. You can help a school in your area by nominating it for a Green School Makeover – read on to learn more, and find out how.

  • From March 1 – September 30, 2011, enter your school for a chance to win a "green school" makeover.
  • There will be one grand prize winner and four schools will each receive $2,500 towards their green school renovations.

Find out how to nominate a school at Pureology:  http://pureology.com/greenschools/entermyschool

One grand prize winner will get $65,000 to renovate their school – plus an additional $65,000 worth of technical assistance. Four runner-up schools will get $2,500 to use towards green school renovations.

This is a great opportunity for schools struggling with budget shortfalls—it can help them build a healthier learning environment for their students while also saving money on energy use for years to come—and I bet some of your readers would want to nominate their kids’ school (DEADLINE Sept 30, 2011).

The makeover can help:

- Provide More Money for Student Resources

· operating costs for energy and water can be reduced by as much as 40% - money can be reinvested in text books or computers

- Improve Student Performance

· Studies show test scores can improve as much as 25% when kids are in a healthy learning environment

- Protect Kids’ Health

·  Good ventilation and the use of green building materials improves student and teacher health – this means fewer sick days and better attendance

So what are you waiting for?  Head over to Pureology and nominate a school today!

As both a student and a blogger I spend a lot of time on my computer, unfortunately my old desk wasn’t nearly big enough for me to get any real work done so I ended up spending hours sitting at the dining room table every day—not a good time.  I needed a computer desk that was functional and stylish without being overly expensive and thanks to one of my favorite online stores, Hayneedle, I found a computer desk that has everything I needed and then some!

Hayneedle has been one of my favorite places to shop for some time now, not only do they have an incredible selection of home furnishings, they also have products that can stand the test of time and that is a HUGE plus when you’re a busy mom on a budget like I am.  When I found out that I would be doing a review for Hayneedle I was extremely excited, I really do love their stuff, and I knew exactly what I wanted to review—a computer desk.  Thankfully, Hayneedle has a huge selection of computer desks, there is truly something for every budget and every need.

In the past I’ve chosen my home office furniture based on how much space I had to work with within my computer room and in the past that space has been extremely limited.  When we moved into our house last March we gained so much more room therefore I had more room to work with when choosing a new computer desk.  I looked at so many gorgeous desks before finding one that fit my needs perfectly, the Bush Wheaton Corner Computer Desk.

About the Bush Wheaton Corner Computer Desk:

The Bush Wheaton Corner Computer Desk defines convenient. An included file component catches important documents and can be situated on either the right or the left side of the unit. Its corner design and small footprint won't hog valuable floor space. Printer storage on the desktop keeps equipment out of the way. And when you sit down at it for a bit of work at home, no one will mind if you do so in your pajamas.

This streamlined corner desk is constructed with durable laminate finished in a rich antique black at the base and a warm cherry along the desktop. Pedestal storage - including one large file drawer for letter-size files, one supply drawer, and two top work-in-progress slots for notes and documents - can be situated on either the right or the left side of the unit. A raised printer shelf at one side of the desktop frees the work space for projects, and maybe a few family photographs, too.

I chose this desk for many reasons, but the biggest reason was the large work surface and all of that space definitely comes in handy when I’m working on a homework assignment that requires me to use my computer and multiple textbooks at the same time.  I also love that the storage drawers are so spacious and that you can place the drawers on either side of the desk.  The corner design makes it so easy to find the perfect spot in your home office, or even your living room, for this desk.  The printer shelf is also very convenient for people with small desktop printers.

When my desk arrived I was shocked at how much the box weighed, I seriously could not lift the box from the side of my house (where the FedEx man left it) to get it into the house and I knew that meant that I would not be putting the desk together on my own.  When I opened the box (with my BIL’s help) I was instantly overwhelmed by all of the pieces, the hardware, the pages of instructions, to be honest, I wasn’t sure at first glance that I could even manage to put the desk together at all—I should have had more faith in myself.  Even though there were a lot of pieces to the desk I managed to put the desk together, with a little help from my BIL, in about 4 hours—not bad for someone who has NEVER put anything together on her own.  If I can do it, you can definitely do it!  Once the desk was assembled I was beyond impressed, this desk is not only highly functional, it’s also gorgeous, I can’t tell you how many compliments I have received!

It’s not often that I get to sit down and write a personal post, and I really have too much to do to be doing it now, but I needed to get some of the stuff I’ve been carrying around off of my chest…so thanks in advance for listening!

Wow where to begin…hmmm let’s start with the #1 source of my stress at the moment—school.  I never dreamed when I enrolled at N.K.U. that I would be in over my head, I’m a pro at college after all, or so I thought.  I can’t even begin to tell you how much different a big university is compared to the small community college I used to attend.  The professors are harder, the courses are harder, and the grades are harder to keep on point…I am doing well, but it is definitely a struggle to keep it up!  One of the classes giving me the biggest headache at the moment is my Small Group Communications class…the professor has it out for me I’m just convinced that he does…he refuses to give me a grade higher than a B and I am NOT happy about that.  But I suppose that just like anything else worth having in life a college degree is not going to come easily…and I am trying to make myself understand that one B at a time!

Another area of stress in my life at the moment is my children, it seems like the more stressed out I get the more they refuse to listen.  My oldest daughter’s seem to have went straight from preschoolers to teenagers, completely skipping the years where they are supposed to listen and do what they are told.  Instead of listening my daughters give me 125 reasons why they shouldn’t do this or why they need to do  that and it is starting to rub me the wrong way.  I am notorious for NOT following through with punishment and I know that needs to change, it is yet another thing I need to work harder at in the coming months.
My youngest children seem to have minds of their own as well and those minds seem to be in complete agreement that Mommy is the enemy and she must be taken out at all costs.  Between the constant running, screaming, mess making, and tantrums and the fact that they NEVER take naps but somehow manage to stay up till 1 am (or often later) is turning me into one cranky, pissed off, Zombie Mommy!  I have tried every trick in the book when it comes to discipline for my youngest; the ones that worked on my oldest daughters, the ones that never worked on my oldest daughters, and the ones that everyone and their mother want to suggest when I mention my two hellions, I mean angels, and NOTHING works.  Some days I feel like I am fighting a losing battle, some days I want to crawl into my bed and hide from the world, but I don’t and I will not stop my quest for world domination, I mean finding a way to discipline my unruly kiddos.

That brings us to my bliggity blog…you liked that huh.  I feel like Misadventures is coming into its own (and I have all of you to think for that) but it is also becoming much harder to balance life, school, demons (I mean kiddos), and my blog equally so if you notice I never post of weekends that would be why.  Hopefully I will figure it all out soon enough, or not as the case will most certainly be, but I guess I have a lifetime to work on that!

For so long I have been trying to figure out who I am...I've been so sure that I wanted to be a teacher, a lawyer, and now I'm convinced that I should do medical coding and billing. Since I'm going to school as I try to decide it's starting to be this long drawn out, very expensive process and I really just want to say enough is enough and choose what I want to do with the rest of my life. For some strange reason I just can not see myself as anything other than "Mommy". I wonder why that is? Does having kids mean you have to give up some of you? Do your dreams have to be put on hold and then modified once you're a parent? Am I the only one who has had this problem?

Every morning when my alarm goes off I look to Heaven and ask, no beg God to let the next hour or so go smoothly! My two oldest daughters are most definitely NOT morning people, they're grumpy, obnoxious, and down right mean in the mornings! Going into their room to wake them up for school is like volunteering yourself to be the attack dummy in self defense class. Mornings in my house used to include screaming, whining, and at least one, more often than not, both of my girls missing the bus. I knew that I had to do something in order to take control of the situation so I came up with a few ideas that have saved me countless migraines and have kept my girls from missing the bus.

  • First I decided to put an alarm clock in the girls room and set it for 10 minutes before I usually wake them up. This serves two purposes; 1. they learn responsibility by waking themselves up for school, and 2. if they get up without me waking them up they are rewarded by getting a special treat (something small like a piece of candy or a sticker). It has actually worked really well and they like the feeling of being responsible!

  • My girls love to take their lunch to school rather than eating whatever the cafeteria may have that day so I make it a rule that if they want to pack their lunch they have to be up and ready for school in time to help me make it in the morning. I used to pack it for them the night before, but this way they are motivated to get up and I have help in making their lunches.

  • I have my girls pick out their clothes for school the night before, I used to have them leave their clothes in the living room so they would have them ready the next morning, but they always seemed to take forever to get dressed. I decided that in order to get them dressed quicker I needed to figure something out. I decided to make it another rule that they have to get dressed in their rooms before they can come into the living room. This has also worked really well since they like to watch television in the mornings wile the wait for the bus.

  • And the biggest change I made was banning TV in the mornings until the girls are completely ready (coats and backpacks on) to get on the bus! They really try to get ready faster now because they know there will be no TV until they are ready to go!

These things have not made my girls "morning people" but it most certainly has helped them get ready for school on time and saved me from having to take them to school every other day!
